The Yellow Wallpaper

So we had to read "The Yellow Wallpaper" today for class, and it was rather interesting.  The main character, who never tells us her name, is a writer who is going mad. She writes in a journal and brings up more than once about how her husband, John, disapproves of her writing.  She also tells us that both John and her brother are physicians who don't believe that she is ill. This can been seen in the following quote, "John does not know how much I really suffer. He knows that here is no reason to suffer, and that satisfies him." The main character starts off just sort of mad, but gets increasingly worse as the time spent in the room increases. She begins to think that the wallpaper is moving and describes it as "it is like being in a bad dream."  In the end, what really happens really however you interpret it.  While reading the short story, there are subtle hits that the narrator is actually in an insane asylum.  My only tip to those who haven't read this story is to curl up in front of a fire with it and read it straight through...it will only take you thirty minutes, give or take a few!
