Persepolis is a great graphic novel. It exposes the problems that Iranians, and other people from the Middle East, are facing daily. This book shows the events that people in other places around the world face every day. Americans take for granted all the security and protection we have, we can walk to school and don't have to worry about being bombed on a daily basis, girls can wear short skirts and low cut tops without being beaten or executed, our soldiers have war protesters attend their funeral and those protesters don't have to serve time for that display. If someone breaks into our homes, we can count on police and protective services coming and helping to find out who is responsible. We can attend religious gatherings and drink alcohol (provided you are 21-years-old) and don't have to worry about being executed for it. Everyone can get a public education and won't be shot for their opinions. Next time you go to a protest, political demonstration, out for a run, wear shorts, or even your hair down, please try not to take it for granted. There are people just like you who don't get to do those things without risking execution.Friday, March 18, 2011

True that! I totally agree with you. I think as Americans not only are we not knowledgeable about the cultures of the middle east, but we also can't even begin to understand what they are going through over there. For me it's scary just imaging what young girls have or had gone through, and props for them being so strong. Living in the US we haven't even had a taste of what it's like over there, so I think that's why we do take for granted things that we have provided. We have never known otherwise (for a lot of us). And until you actually go to a third world country or even a country that isn't like the US you will always take some things for granted. Being the young adults that we are, I think it is very hard to imagine things could be that bad, because we don't have as much knowledge as the rest of the world yet. Hopefully we all grow up to be interested in places much different than ours and learn about them too.
ReplyDeleteI completly agree with you. Us Americans are very lucky to have everything that we do. I really liked this book because it did a great job showing what life is like in another part of the world. I think that most Americans don't realize what it is like in other countries and how other people have to live. I learned a lot about Iran and Iranian culture from this book.
